The Ugly Duckling
The Ugly Duckling
Author: Hans Christian Anderson
Genre: Traditional Literature
Grades: 2-5
Summary:
This is a story about a duckling who hatched later than the rest of his brothers and sisters. When he popped out of his large shell, his mother realized that he is not like the rest of the ducklings. He was introduced to and older duck who said he was "big and ugly". Not only was he bitten, pushed and made fun of by the other ducklings, but all of the chickens were doing the same. He was even kicked by the farm girl who fed them. When he finally ran away, he found some geese who said they will take him in. However it did not last long the geese were gunned down by hunters. He then found a cottage where a old woman, tom cat, and hen lived. He was then bombarded with questions and was told it was best for him to leave. The ugly duckling then found some water where he could swim to continue his journey. Along his path he saw some swans that made him feel strange. As winter came his swimming space froze over and was found by a peasant who wanted to eat him but managed to escape. The next Spring he found the swans again and decided to join them. When he looked in the clear stream he saw that he wasn't a duckling but was a beautiful swan.
This story would be great to have in a classroom because it tells students a important that life is not about where you start it is how you finish. So on the "ducklings" journey he found that he wasn't a ugly duck but was a swan that was from a duckling nest.
