This is a story about a boy, named August Pullman, who has always been homeschooled because he has had a condition that caused him to get 27 surgeries on his face. His parents decide that it is about time that he begins going to a real school. When he gets to school he is welcomed by Principle Tushman and then joined by three other students, Jack Will, Julian, And Charlotte to help him navigate around the school. He happens to find two friends, Summer and Jack Will, even though throughout the school day people would avoid touching him. His older sister Olivia is always there to have his back when he needs it, because of August's condition she often feels excluded because he gets most of the attention. One night at nature camp, everything turns for the better when he and Jack are walking and are confronted by some older kids. People from his class heard what was going on and came to stick up for them.
I believe that this is a good book to have in any classroom because it shows children that no matter what people look like on the outside, it is important to be kind and caring to others.
