Holes
Holes
Author: Louis Sachar
Medal: Newbery Award
Genre: Realistic Fiction
Grades: 5-8
This story is about a boy named Stanley Yelnats who has had a curse on him caused by his great-grandfather when he lied to Madam Zeroni. He was sent to Camp Greenlake, a juvenile detention center for a crime he didn't commit. He is forced to dig holes in the dirt everyday to build his character, but he realized that they are digging for something. He becomes friends with a boy named Zero. They make a deal to that if Stanley teaches Zero how to read that he will help Stanley dig his holes. This causes problems with the other campers and eventually the warden deals with the issue. One day, one of the camp counselors is rude to Zero and cause him to run away. Soon later, Stanley tries to steal a truck to go save Zero but he crashes and runs after Zero anyways. Struggling in the desert, Stanley and Zero make their way to God's Thumb in the mountains in search of water and food. After dangerous situations and Zero passing out, they make it to the top to find water and onions for them to eat. While at the top, Zero and Stanley realize that their ancestors knew each other and that there is likely a treasure at the bottom of the lake that belongs to Stanley. The two run back to Camp Green Lake and start digging for the treasure. Eventually, they find the treasure and are surrounded by deadly yellow-spotted lizards and the camp counselors. The warden tries to take away Stanley's treasure but then Stanley's lawyer saves the boys from the counselors. The counselors are then arrested for their treatment of the children. Stanley and Zero go home with the treasure and all the campers of Camp Green Lake are released. I would have this book in class and show the movie to the students to see what differences they can find.
